Jan 31, 2007 (newstodate): As from January 30, 2007, the Slovak carrier Slovak Airlines has been forced to suspend operations.
The decision is driven by Austrian Airlines Group that has now stopped all financial transfers to Slovak Airlines, claiming that the Slocak government has repeatedly failed to honour a long due legal agreement by 31 December 2006, despite being given extensions on the due date on a number of different occasions.
Austrian Airlines has also taken back one Fokker 100 and one Boeing 737-300 placed with Slovak Airlines in order to secure the Group's property.
-The further development of Slovakian aviation, particularly in the wake of the recently cancelled airport privatisation project, has suffered another blow due to this situation. The refusal of the Slovakian Government to fulfil its promises will not encourage foreign investors to commit themselves to the creation of value in Slovakia, says Austrian Airlines in a release.
Austrian Airlines acquired 62 percent of the capital stock of Slovak Airlines in January 2005, within the framework of a capital increase.
Slovak Airlines operated scheduled services on the Bratislava-Brussels and Bratislava-Moscow routes.
