Sep 12, 2006 (newstodate): A hearing by the US House of representatives on security issues pertaining to passenger use of mobile phones during commercial flights has raised concerns.
The Dept of Homeland Security and the US Dept of Justice maintain that the use of personal cell phones onboard aircraft could potentially facilitate a coordinated attack between a person on the aircraft and a person on the ground, between persons traveling on different aircraft, and/or persons traveling on the same aircraft located in different cabin sections.
The two Departmens also expressed concern that the potential for terrorists and other criminals to use communications devices as remote-controlled detonators of onboard explosives in e.g. cargo holds would be increased if passengers are allowed to use own mobile phones during flight.
