Sep 14, 2006 (newstodate): The shortfall of Varig's services between South America and Europe has driven rates up to new heights.
-Due to lack of uplift capacity on the routes, air cargo rates have risen by more than 20 percent over the last months, says Jens Davidsen, Kuehne & Nagel (Denmark) airfreight manager.
-This is the case in the Scandinavian markets as well, even if the Varig service at Copenhagen offered belly capacity only and was therefore less crucial.
-Forwarders are now fighting for capacity, but due to the combined European buying power of Kuehne & Nagel we are still able to get access to the capacity we need, he says.
South America is clearly developing strongly, but even so airlines have been reluctant to throw capacity into this market, pending the eventual come-back of Varig that is now known to reinstate four weekly freighter services out of Frankfurt, and two weekly freighters out of Amsterdam, giving raise to hopes to see cargo rates down to "normal" levels again.
