Sep 25, 2006 (newstodate): Estonia's Tallinn Airport has launched a major modernisation project supported by EU funds.
The project comprises the rehabilitation of Tallinn Airport's airside area, and upgrading of Tallinn Airport's passenger terminal.
The airside area project to be completed by March 2008 comprises extension and renewing of apron by some 50,000 sq m, extension of taxiway by 1,200 m, construction of a new fire exercise area, installation of temperature sensors at the runway, and measurs to reduce water pollution.
The airport's terminal will be expanded to allow for handling of up to 2.3 mio passengers against the current design limit of 1.2 mio passengers.
The reconstruction will also enable Tallinn Airport to meet EU's Schengen demands for separation of passengers.
A construction works contract was signed on September 25 between Tallinn Airport Ltd. and Estonian contractor Skanska EMV Ltd. Engineering service for supervision of the construction works will provided by the Consortium of Telora-E Ltd and Ramboll Finland Ltd.
The planned terminal construction period is October 2006 to April 2008.
