Sep 7, 2006 (newstodate): Hopes are high in Serbia that the visit by its president to the USA, starting from September 6, will pave the way for an upgrade of Serbia's rating in FAA's flight safety audit.
Serbia is ranked as a Category 2 country, prohibiting the establishment of new routes to the USA due to lack of compliance with ICAO safety standards.
Serbia had hoped to be raised to Cat 2 standards in the latest FAA audit from May this year, enabling JAT to start operating flights to New York from this summer already, but this did not materialise and the airline had to let go its Boeing 767 that had been leased for the purpose.
