Sep 22, 2006 (newstodate): The Ukrainean logistics and transportation market is very demanding, and competition is tough.
-Ukraine is probably seeing its air cargo volumes down in 2006, and with many parties involved and ever-decreasing rates the competition is very tough, says Gunnar Aru, Schenker Ukraine Managing Director.
-Also there are many legal restrictions on the industry, the infrastructure is relatively weak, and the state's protection of its national carrier does not allow foreign airlines to set up airline road feeder services. One result from this is probably that much cargo shifts from air to road transportation, further weakening the airfreight market.
-Schenker Ukraine, with a total of 70 employees, has now established its main 10,000 sq m logistics center at Kiev offering one-stop shopping services, and we have set up a comprehensive domestic distribution network offering five weekly services to all major Ukrainean cities.
-The logistics center is also connected to the railway system, enabling us to develop multi-modal logistics solutions, and Scenker further added seafreight services at Odessa in May, 2006.
-Our immediate next goal will be to integrate with Schenker's global network to be able to offer direct linehauls between Ukraine and Europe's cities. This will add a huge potential to our development, and further bolster our position in the Ukrainean market, says Mr Aru.
