Sep 1, 2006 (newstodate): A series of recent aircraft accidents may drive Russia to ease restrictions, notably import taxation on western aircraft.
A proposal is now being debated, comprising exemption from import tax on Russian airlines' lease of western aircraft, while import taxation will still remain on aircraft acquisition.
Sources say than less than half of Russian-built aircraft in service with Russian airlines are in good technical condition, and only 20 percent of the country's local airports are equipped with facilities to support safe aircraft operations.
