Sep 13, 2006 (newstodate): The trend in recent years towards continued differentiation of air cargo products may have turned.
-At Lufthansa Cargo we have reversed the trend, and consolidated our product portfolio by reducing the number of highly specialised products and streamlining the specs of other premium products, says Michael Schoop, Lufthansa Cargo manager Denmark.
-We focus on premium products including e.g. td.flash,td.x, and td.pro, while products like td.smooth have been integrated into other existing products.
-Benefits are obvious: it makes it easier for the customers, and it certainly enables us to handle the cargo more cost-efficiently due to a higher level of standarisation, he says.
-This is certainly not to say that premium products mean less for us. Some 40 percent of our revenues derive from premium products that account for a consideably smaller proportion of the cargo volumes.
-But the fight for general cargo has intensified and gained in importance for us. Today we highly focus on built-up pallets, so called BUPs, where agents deliver ready-built units to our terminals, gaining speed and quality control at competitive rates, says Mr Schoop.
