Sep 5, 2006 (newstodate): The Latvian forwarding and transportation company Alfaprim Transport has shelved any immediate plans for entering the Lithuanian market.
Alfaprim, formed by the merger, in October 2005, of the Latvian companies Asgard Transports and Panda Kargo, and owned and headed by Elmars Savickis, the original owner and CEO of Panda Kargo, has its headquarters in Riga, Latvia, and an office in Tallinn, Estonia, and in Russia near the Latvian border, and earlier vented plans for setting up in Lithuania as well.
-The Estonian market is doing very well, and in Latvia volumes are growing but rates declining. Lithuania, however, is a ruined market, says Mr Savickis.
-Competition is savage in Lithuania, and is today almost impossible to find qualified staff as most younger professionals will leave for better paid challenges elsewhere in Europe. If we should ever consider again the idea of establishing ourselves in Lithuania it would be in the form of a JV with a Lithuanian partner.
