Sep 20, 2006 (newstodate): Transatlantic cargo may be in for a significant structural change taking volumes off the air transportation.
FastShip has announced that it will issue a tender in November 2006 for 1.3 million tonnes of trans-Atlantic cargo capacity provided by the first three hi-tech JetShips.
The JetShip will provide per unit shipping costs 70 percent lower than typical air rates at twice the speed of conventional surface freight, cutting the transatlantic crossing from seven or eight days to three and a half.
FastShip will provide twice weekly Trans-Atlantic Service commencing in December 2009 between Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and Cherbourg, France.
The tender process will open in November 2006 and will close in the first quarter of 2007 with bidders also invited to contract an option on future capacity on other trade routes.
The JetShips providing s a 10,000 tonnes cargo capacity will sail at up to 40 knots and offer turn-around times down to six hours at specially developed integrated harbour facilitites.
