Sep 7, 2006 (newstodate): Work is progressing on the project for a road between Sisimiut on the eastcoast to Greenland's international airport at Kangerlussuaq/sdr Stromfjord.
Consultants have completed a study on the project's environmental impact and alternative routings, and after a series of public hearings, also now completed, politicians are expected to decide by the end of this month or in early October on the project's future.
The 170 km road connection would replace the current helicopter and sea transportation between Sisimiut and Kangerlussuaq, lifting an estimated 2,374 tonnes of cargo between the two points from sea to road transport, and a further 814 tonnes from helicopter to road, based on figures from 2003.
A road connection would, however, also provide new export opportunities for seafood industries at Sisimiut, not included in the 2003 figures.
