Sep 18, 2006 (newstodate): While statistics by Finiland's CAA shows a decrease in international cargo volumes by 4.1 percent, players in the industry conversely report an increase in volumes in 2006.
-We are certainly seeing a significant increase in volumes in 2006, primarily in exports to Asia, North and South America and even Africa, but also in imports, says Markko Pulliainen, DHL Global Forwarding Finland managing director.
-While we are welcoming the continued expansion in belly capacity to the Far East thanks to Finnair's growth in destinations and frequencies, we deplore the lack of maindeck capacity out of Finland.
-Finland is currently served by Cargolux/Finnair once weekly to Hong Kong and a once-weekly freighter to New York, but apart from this we rely on belly capacity and, for large shipments, by trucking to European hubs.
-With Finland's geographical position, trucking requires between 24 and 48 hours to reach maindeck services, so there is definitely a business case for freighter services at Helsinki to the Far East and several US destinations. I am convinced that there is a solid background for this, says Mr Pulliainen.
