Sep 4, 2006 (newstodate): Competition seems to have once again proved its value at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport.
in August, the airport generated a total of 41 tonnes of air cargo. Not much by world standards, but representing an increase by 53.2 percent, y-o-y.
In January-August the total is thus 292 tonnes, up 21.3 percent on last year.
The strong growth trend at Vagar Airport started this year in April, and has gained momentum month by month.
The increase also reflects the increased traffic at Vagar after the new airline, FaroeJet's start of operation from May 15, alongside the operations of Atlantic Airways on the routes between the Faroe Islands and Denmark.
The next leap in cargo may follow from the expansion of the airport's runway, expected to be decided upon soon by the Faroe Islands Landstinget that took over the airport from the Danish authorities earlier this year.
