Aug 17, 2006 (newstodate): After several accidents at Irkutsk Airport, the government has now decided to construct a new airport to serve the region.
Plans are to locate the new airport between the cities of Irkutsk and Angarsk which will also serve the city of Shelekhov and the strong regional industrial base.
The Government of Irkutsk region and the Federal Agency of Air Transportation agree on the plan that includes federal investments in the construction of runway and taxiways, while regional budgets and private investors will finance the construction of the airport buildings, terminals and infrastructure.
The concept and layour for the new airport is to be finalised before the end of 2007, with construction works slated to start from 2008.
