Aug 2, 2006 (newstodate): Kazakhstan's Almaty International Airport is planning for construction of new runway, due to be completed by the end of 2007.
The new 4,500 m concrete runway will complement the existing 4,400 m runway that is built of ordinary pavement concrete requiring much maintenance and imposing weight limitations on operations by larger aircraft.
-The new runway will be CAT 3B compared to the airport's current CAT 2 status, and we will thus be able to operate even under adverse weather conditions, says Igor Knyazhevskiy, Almaty International Airport Head of International Affairs and Marketing.
-Almaty Int'l Airport is ideally located to provide facilities for aircraft technical stops and re-fuelling on routes between Europe and Southeast Asia served by Boeing 747 and MD-11 aircraft, says Mr Knyazhevskiy.
Among the airport's current regular airline customers are FedEx and China Eastern Airlines.
