Aug 17, 2006 (newstodate): After this summmer the upgrading and modernisation of Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport will gain momentum.
Now managed by the Danish CAA, Vagar Airport will be handed over to the Faroe Islands' own government, paving the road for a long-awaited modernisation program.
Pivotal for the airport's development is the extension by 350 meter of the current 1,250 m runway allowing for operations by larger aircraft including Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 family aircraft without weight restrictions, and more aircraft parking stands at the apron.
Also much in demand is a new passenger terminal to accomodate today's traffic.
The current passenger terminal was built in 1998 to accomodate 70,000 passengers while the aiprort now serves some 200,000 passengers in the same facilities.
The hand-over will take effect from Jaunary 1, 2007, after which a program for the construction works will be finalised and announced in a public tender.
Expectations are that the runway extension can be completed with little delay, while construction of a new passenger terminal will require more time depending on the political decision-making process.
As part of the hand-over, the Danish state has granted DKK 365 mio for the airport's modernisation.
