Aug 29, 2006 (newstodate): Russia and Ukraine are very demanding markets, but Estonian Air Cargo sees good prospects for cargo transfer business.
-We have an increasing number of not least Scandinavian export customers who need to send shipments to Moscow or Kiev by air as they do not like the longer and less safe road transportation, says Toomas Orukivi, Estonian Air Cargo manager.
-Even if our cargo capacity to these markets is limited to belly holds on passenger aircraft, the segment is indeed attractive as rates are correspondingly higher than average, he says.
-Of course handling charges and customs fees are very high at these airports, so the air transport is preferred by customers who send high-value shipments to these markets.
-At Moscow we work with both the state-owned Sheremetyevo 1 cargo handling company, and the privately-owned Sheremetyevo Cargo, giving customers the choice between two options.
-The biggest problems is probably that if the shipper is not a regular and frequent customer, he will have to pay high fees for handling and customs documentation for his 25-200 kg shipments.
-We work hard to come up with the optimal solutions to these issues of transfer shipments to Russia and Ukraine, and I am convinced that if we succeed, this will provide us with a very attractive niche business with significant potentials for growth, says Mr Orukivi.
