Jul 4, 2006 (newstodate): Recontruction work on the Serbian airport Ponikve is in full swing, and plans are to open the ex-military base to commercial traffic in three months.
After the upgrade that includes adding some 300 m to the 2,300 m runway, the airport will be able to operate aircraft up to 40 tonnes of take-off weight, and plans are to see also cargo traffic at the airport to serve the region's industries.
Work is also progressing on another ex-AFB at Krajelvo, and Serbia plans to open up to five additional military airport to ease pressure on the country's Nis and Surcin airport.
