Jul 7, 2006 (newstodate): Adria Airways is on the offensive to grow its cargo business.
The carrier has just launched a new freighter route between Ljubjlana and Liege, and acquired a SAAB 340 freighter aircraft.
Plans are to add one more SAAB 340 freighter this autumn, and the carrier thus expects its cargo volumes to increase by some 30 percent in 2006.
In 2005, Adria Airways carried "more than" 3,000 tonnes of cargo. In the first four months of 2006 Adria Cargo carried 1,719 tonnes of freight, up 17 percent y-o-y.
-The decision to purchase and lease two cargo aircraft is connected with our plans to expand freight service, says Boris Rigler, Adria Airways head of cargo services.
-Cargo received in Liege and Frankfurt will be delivered on a morning flight to Ljubljana, from where it will be sent onward to Zagreb, Sarajevo, Pristina and Timisoara. Flight times fit the needs of cargo transport to allow timely arrival in Ljubljana, Zagreb, Sarajevo, Pristina and Timisoara, as well as the return to Liege and Frankfurt, making possible fast global freight connections.
-Our new aircraft, which has made it possible for us to open new routes, brings us closer to our goal of becoming the leading air freight carrier in the region, says Mr Rigler.
The dry-lease of the second SAAB 340A freighter is connected with a new business partner, TNT logistics company that has entered an agreement with Adria Airways on cargo transport to the entire Balkan region.
