Jun 27, 2006 (newstodate): Air cargo is on the increase at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport, now comprising half of the airport's combined cargo and mail volumes.
Total air cargo volumes were up by 11.1 percent during January-May, totalling 170 tonnes.
After a slow start in January, when volumes dropped by 11.4 percent, y-o-y, to 24.9 tonnes, Vagar has seen mostly double-digit growth rates in cargo so far this year, with an increase by 51 percent in May, to 51 tonnes.
Since May 15 this year, the airport has seen the start of traffic by newcomer FaroeJet alongside its other operator, Atlantic Airways, on routes between Copenhagen and Vagar.
By contrast, air mail has lost in volume during January-May, decreasing by 18.3 percent y-o-y to 176 tonnes.
