Jun 1, 2006 (newstodate): Russia's Ministry of Transportation has decided to further reduce the number of Russian airports designated for international traffic.
Russia now has a total of 393 operational commercial airports, of which only 69 operate according to international standards, and this number will be further reduced by 21 units, sources say.
Criteria including current international traffic volume will be determining which airports will be relegated to domestic use only.
