Jun 9, 2006 (newstodate): Aviastar-SP aircraft factory at Ulyanovsk has resumed preparations for production of the AN-124 Ruslan freighter.
The manufacturer claims capacity to produce up to 50 units annually.
The AN-124 first flew in October, 1985, when plans were to produce 60 aircraft at Ulyanovsk plus 36 in Kiev. Production stopped, however, with the fall of Soviet Russia after only 48 units had been produced, primarily for military purposes.
The factory is now preparing to start work on five aircraft to Volga-Dnepr and Polet Airlines, respectively, and Antonov Airlines and Atlant-Soyuz are expected to place orders as well.
Further down the line are orders expected from customers in the United Arab Emirates.
