Jun 29, 2006 (newstodate): US and Bahrain-based companies have landed a contract to build and operate a new airport in Najaf, Iraq.
Based on a small, existing military airport, the new facility will have an extended runway and tarmac, and a new terminal to handle up to 15 passenger aircraft.
Najaf city has also set up a new airline, Najaf Airlines that will cooperate with an Iranian carrier to transport pilgrims into the area's Muslim holy sites.
