Jun 28, 2006 (newstodate): The Latvian airport Ventspils will open a tender in a month for the construction of a new hangar.
The 2-200 sq m hangar will accomodate Latvian Border Control's helicopter that will be stationed at the airport from next year.
-We are also awaiting Rambol's materplan for Ventspils Airport by the end of this year. This will form the foundation for applications to EU's structural funds for a runway extension and airports infrastructure modernisation, says Arthurs Kokaras, Ventspils Airport manager.
-We are especially keen to see our 1,300 m runway extended by some 500 meters to allow for operations by larger aircraft. The current runway is too short for Boeing and Airbus operations, and this unfortunately makes it difficult for us to attract operators, he says.
According to Mr Kokaras, a tender for runway extension may be opened by 2008, provided EU funds are granted.
In the short term, the airport will also need to invest in new equipment including fire fighting, handling and other services.
