Jun 20, 2006 (newstodate): Finnair has now received its first Airbus A340 aircraft.
The ex-Virgin Atlantic aircraft had its first commercial operation on June 19 and will initially operate 30 domestic flights before it is transferred to its eventual route between Helsinki and Shanghai.
This first Airbus A340, operated on a lease contract, marks the launch for Finnair's long-haul fleet renewal during which the airline will acquire 12 new Airbus wide-body aircraft including nine A350 and three A340 aircraft.
To support the strong growth of Finnair's Asian traffic, the next A340 aircraft will arrive in 2007-08, while the current long-haul MD-11 fleet will be phased out by 2012.
With the new long-haul fleet Finnair will increase the number of destinations in Asia by one or two each year. This year the route network has grown with Nagoya in Japan in the beginning of June and Delhi, India will be added in November, and in the summer 2007 the carrier will launch its new route to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.
With these new routes Finnair will have a total of 11 destinations in Asia.
