Jun 28, 2006 (newstodate): Work is progressing for the re-opening later this year of Grozny's Severny Airport, Chechnya.
The 1,700 m runway has reportedly been restored, and work is now going on to renovate the airport area including terminals.
The project to reopen Severny airport for commercial flights to Moscow has been underway since 2001, and a first deadline for reconstruction expired at the beginning of 2005 already.
The project has, however, been hampered by both sustained fightings and several corruption cases.
A recent plan envisaged the first flight to take place from the renovated airport earlier this year, but the deadline was again postponed.
