Jun 20, 2006 (newstodate): After test landings and take-offs slated for early August, Sofia Airport expects to open its new runway from early September.
The new, revised time-table has been defined and agreed upon by the Kuwaiti construction company Mohammed Abdulmohsin Al-Kharafi and Sons, the Danish engineering consultancy firm COWI, and the airport.
The original hand-over date was February, 2006, but was delayed several times due to problems with undetected weak uinderground sections.
The new re-surfaced runway is 2,500 m long.
Other projects at Sofia Airport including the building of a new terminal and taxiways remain uncompleted after several mishaps and changes of providers.
