May 3, 2006 (newstodate): A tender is now being opened for the extension of the runway at Riga Airport, Latvia.
-Plans are to extend the current runway from 2,550 to 3,200 m, allowing for operations by larger aircraft including Boeing 747s, says Liene Freivalde, Riga Airport public relations officer.
-Daily operations will be maintained during the construction period expected to start in July, and we expect the runway to be ready by next summer, depending on the eventual selection of the construction company.
-Riga Airport is seeing its aircraft operations volumes up, and we are especially targeting the ever-increasing cargo traffic from China with large freighters that cannot now operate without weight penalty at the current rather short runway, she says.
