May 5, 2006 (newstodate): The Norwegian Svalbard Airport at Longyear is launching a comprehensive modernisation program.
The program includes the construction of a new 2,600 sq m terminal to replace the existing hangar facility that has so far served the passengers.
-Apart from issues of comfort, the decision to build a new terminal is driven by the current and coming EU security requirements that could not be met by the old terminal, says Ole M. Rambech, Svalbard Airport manager.
-We are also seeing passenger volumes up by 3-3.5 percent annually, reaching 95,000 passengers in 2005, which calls for better facilities.
Also part of the program is rehabilitation of the 2,500 m runway to implement safety zones at both ends, requiring 160 m to be "moved" from the east to the west end of the runway.
The construction by Skanska AS of the new terminal has started and slated for completion by Christmas, 2007, while the runway construction work by a Finnish company will take place from medio June until August, with a peak during July 1-24, when severe restricitons on air traffic will be imposed.
