May 29, 2006 (newstodate): The fire last week in the cargo area of Istanbul Ataturk Airport causes havoc for the airfreight industry.
Most of the airlines are currently accepting their export cargo from the new MNG Airlines cargo terminal that was not affected by the disaster, while import cargo shipments are mainly transferred to various off-airport terminals.
The airport is marred by huge congestions for both import and export cargo, and airport authorities are currently trying to speed up the temporary re-opening of an old state-owned warehouse, Tasis, that was closed down a few years ago.
Three privately-owned terminals were burnt down entirely, including the Sistem warehouse that mostly handled Lufthansa Cargo shipments, the Celebi warehouse that handled cargo for Singapore Airlines Cargo, Emirates SkyCargo, Saudia, Azerbaijan Hava Yollari, and Air Astana, and the former MNG Airlines Cargo terminal Havas that was recently taken over by a new owner and amidst reconstruction work.
