May 8, 2006 (newstodate): Pending a political decision to extend the runway at the Faroe Islands' Vagar Airport, the Faroese carrier Atlantic Airways will consider adding larger aircraft to its fleet.
After years of deliberation, the Faroese LAndstinget is expected to finally decide on the long-awaited 150 m runway extension within the next three or four months.
-The need for larger aircraft is driven not primarily by passenger demands as our fleet of BAe 146 and Avro aircraft is fully capable of delivering frequent and comfortable connections, but from the airline's point of view the benefits derive from a larger critical mass to enhance profitablity in operations, says Magni Arge, Atlantic Airways managing director.
The carrier has evaluated Airbus A319, Boeing 737-700, and Embraer 190 as viable options, but a runway extension is needed to allow for flights with full loads without weight penalty.
Provided a decision on the issue is reached this autumn, an extended runway would be ready for operational service by 2009.
