May 26, 2006 (newstodate): Budapest Airport has opened a closed tender for the sale of its ground handling business.
The operator of Ferihegy International Airport will invite several professional, international ground handling companies to take part in the tender.
-Ground handling is not a business that an airport operator is best-placed to run, as it can be managed much better by a specialist ground handling company. The sale is expected to lead to improvements in both the quality of service in ground handling at Ferihegy, and in prices to airlines, says Stewart Wingate, Budapest Airport CEO-Designate.
BA Handling employs around 500 employees whose terms and conditions are governed by an existing collective agreement valid until 11th September 2008. The sale has been agreed in principle by the trades unions and following statutory consultation.
The due diligence period for bidders will last until the end of June. Bid submission, selection of preferred bidder, and consultation with workers will be during July and the finalising of the contract is expected to be in August.
