May 16, 2006 (newstodate): Belgrade Airport has now opened its new T2 passenger terminal as part of a major airport expansion program.
The new terminal, designed for handling five mio passengers annually, has 18 airbridges and meets European security and safety standards.
-Within a few months, work will start on renovating the old T1 terminal to the same levels, and while it will initially serve domestic passenger traffic in Serbia-Montenegro, its future may probably be to serve international traffic as well, says Slobodan Jaredic, Belgrade Airport cargo manager.
On May 21 the country will hold a national referendum to decide on whether to remain one, or split into two states, and chances are that the latter option will carry the day, rendering the domestic notion obsolete.
-Before the end of May, a contract will be signed with our US partner for the construction of a new cargo centre, with work to start from July and opening slated for March 2007, says Mr Jaredic.
-The cargo and logistics centre will strive to become the region's main cargo transfer and transit centre as well, and plans are to add also a railway trail to facilitate multi-modal transports.
Further down the line are plans for a new, second runway at Belgrade Airport.
