May 2, 2006 (newstodate): Privately-owned airline Air Armenia holds a strong position in the cargo traffic between Europe and Armenia.
Set up in June 2002 and operating since August 2002, the airline has a fleet of An-12 and AN-72 aircraft and a staff of around 100, including employees working at its aircraft maintenance base that serves Russian-built aircraft but is also now in the process of certification for maintenance of certain western-built aircraft types.
-Our main scheduled cargo route is Yerevan-Frankfurt Hahn, served twice weekly, and in addition we perform many cargo charter operations, says Angela Angelika, Air Armenia sales manager.
-Our main ex-Armenia loads include clayfish, meat, and industrial products, while we take a wide variety of import goods from Europe and the USA from Frankfurt to Yerevan.
-The air cargo market is rather prospective as Armenia is otherwise served by only passenger aircraft with limited cargo capacity, and we have built up much experience in this business, says Mrs Angelika.
