Apr 3, 2006 (newstodate): Funds have now been dedicated to the deactivation and destruction of seven remaining bombs on the runway of Ponikve Airport, Serbia.
This is the first phase in the upgrading of the former military air base that will serve as a civilian airport relieving the pressure on Beograd Airport.
To promote the process, the management of Beograd Airport has signed a contract with a number of Serb regional governments and industrial association to provide a feasibility study for the rehabilitation and reconstructon of Ponikve Airport.
Plans are to add 800 metres will to the existing 2,300 metres runway.
After the upgrade, the airport will be able to operate aircraft up to 40 tonnes of take-off weight, and plans are to see also cargo traffic at the airport to serve the region's industries.
