Apr 6, 2006 (newstodate): JAT's plans for the US authorities to grant permission for opening the planned route between Beograd and New York now seem rather uncertain.
In the current safety evaluation from January, Serbia is ranked as a Category 2 country, prohibiting the establishment of new routes to the USA due to lack of compliance with ICAO safety standards.
And it has now become increasingly clear that the upgrading of Serbia is not imminent.
-We would continue to work with a country in Category 2 to help them recognize and remedy deficiencies, but it would be pointless to reassess a country unless some improvement was indicated, says Les Dorr, FAA communications officer.
-As for Serbia, there's nothing currently on the schedule. Our understanding is that Serbia is still working on their action plan to correct deficiencies, he says.
As JAT is already taking possession of its Boeing 767 aircraft, it is expected that the carrier will instead introduce the long-range aircraft on new routes to the Far East.
