Mar 10, 2006 (newstodate): When EU president Barroso meets Russian president Vladimir Putin on March 17 to "step up" the EU-Russia strategic partnership, the long-overdue issue of Russian overflight charges may be on the agenda.
The meeting precedes the forthcoming G8 Summit in St. Petersburg, and also serves to prepare the framework for post-2007 cooperation as the current EU-Russia Partnership and Cooperation agreement will expire in 2007.
The EU commissioner for Transport said in March that "there will be no entry into WTO for Russia without such formal commitment" to abolish the exhorbitant charges levied by Russia on western airlines operating the new trans-polar routes over Siberia.
