Mar 23, 2006 (newstodate): Russia needs more aircraft capacity to cope with rising market demands for air transportation.
As Russia's own aircraft industry has failed to keep pace with the market, Russia will need to import some 100 leased aircraft during 2008-2009.
Regional jets will account for 50-65 of these, the remainder being 29-37 medium-range aircraft.
During the last seven years, Russia has been highly restrictive against import of western-built aircraft, hoping to support its domestic aircraft manufacturers against western competition. But this led only to a severe shortage of aircraft allowed to operate into international markets.
