Mar 7, 2006 (newstodate): Work will soon start on the Serbian airport Ponikve to prepare for commercial traffic.
The military-owned Servian airport will first have its runway cleared of mines, and an additional 800 metres will then be constructed to expand the existing 2,300 metres runway.
After the upgrade, the airport will be able to operate aircraft up to 40 tonnes of take-off weight, and plans are to see also cargo traffic at the airport to serve the region's industries.
The management of Beograd Airport has signed a contract with a number of Serb regional governments and industrial association to provide a feasibility study for the rehabilitation and reconstructon of Ponikve Airport as part of a plan to build up a Serbian airports network to relieve the pressure on Beograd Airport.
