Mar 28, 2006 (newstodate): Airlines differ in their approach to accepting small-size general cargo shipments in the Nordic markets.
Yesterday SAS Cargo announced that from April 1 all shipments up to 100 kg to European destinations will be accepted as Priority Cargo only, entailing higher rates.
Lufthansa Cargo says it accepts shipments below 100 kg as general cargo in Norway, Finland and Denmark, but not in Sweden.
-But in general one can say that we still prioritise Express Cargo, td.Flash, for shipments less than 100 kg to European destinations, says a company spokesperson.
KLM Cargo maintains a two-fold strategy on the issue.
-Joining the SkyTeam product portfolio last spring we declared all cargo leaving on aircraft and be transfered to other aircraft at Amsterdam to be priority, or equation cargo, says a KLM Cargo spokesman.
-But due to problems with cargo handling at Copenhagen Airport we had to truck cargo to Amsterdam, and were thus forced to carry the cargo as general, or dimension cargo.
-Stiff competition especially from the integrators in the Scandinavian markets has since forced us to lower rates significantly on even the priority, or equation cargo, leading to little price differentiation. So in effect we accept even 100 kg general cargo shipments.
