Mar 2, 2006 (newstodate): At a recent visit to Finland, the EU commissioner for Transport again made it clear that he wants Russia to abolish the exhorbitant over-flight charges on the Siberian air lanes.
-There is one pre-condition before we can intensify our cooperation with Russia on transport: Russia must respect their commitments and abolish illegal over-flight payments for Siberia, said Mr Jacques Barrot.
-A partnership that merits the name, requires
respect of commitments on both sides. I am still waiting for a formal and final proposal from the Russian side on how they want to progressively phase out the over-flight payments for Siberia.
-There will be no entry into WTO for Russia without such formal commitment, he said.
