Mar 9, 2006 (newstodate): The Armenian government has decided to invest in the upgrading of Gyumri Shirak International Airport.
The airport, located 1,524 meters above sea-level and designed for serving most aircraft types, serves as an alternate airport to the capital Yerevan Zvartnots Airport that is often closed down due to frequent heavy fog conditions.
Work will first focus on a thorough description of Shirak Airport's geodesic and geological conditions, and based on this a program will be formulated for a complete refurbishment and re-equipment.
The program comprises the reconstruction of the runway and of the signal system, modernization of the safety and ground-based equipment, and expansion of the range of services, all aiming at meeting ICAO standards.
