Mar 27, 2006 (newstodate): Taking effect from Januar 1, 2007, EU has agreed on new rules to enhance air cargo security in all 25 member states.
These new security rules, once in force, will greatly help to harmonise the framework applying to air carriers, but also forwarders and shippers sending cargo by air.
So far these actors have had to apply different rules from Member State to Member State due to the little detail contained in the main EU aviation security legislation, Regulation 2320/2002.
Common obligations and common criteria for becoming a regulated agent or a known consignor will now apply, amd the regulation will also ensure that cargo to be transported by air is secured as early as possible in the supply chain, which is of fundamental importance for smooth airline operations.
Some issues including transfer cargo remain to be settled in later amnendments to the regulation.
