Feb 1, 2006 (newstodate): Confusion still surrounds plans by Serbian carrier JAT to start Northatlantic operations to USA and Canada from this summer.
Despite much effort from the Serbian authorities, FAA has retained its Category 2 rating of Serbia in its latest safety assesment published in January 2006.
Category 2, "Does Not Comply with ICAO Standards", means that the FAA assessed Serbia's civil aviation authority and determined that it does not provide safety oversight of its air carrier operators in accordance with the minimum safety oversight standards established by ICAO.
As JAT is not flying to the US at the time of the assesment, it falls in "group 2" of countries.
-Carriers from these countries will not be permitted to commence service to the United States while in Category 2 status, although they may conduct services if operated using aircraft wet-leased from a duly authorized and properly supervised U.S. carrier or a foreign air carrier from a Category 1 country that is authorized to serve the United States with its own aircraft, says FAA.
Industry sources have earlier indicated that JAT may cooperate with Uzbekistan Hava Yollari, and that the route will be served twice weekly, using Uzbekistan Hava Yollari's A310 aircraft.
Uzbekistan is rated as a Category 1 country by FAA, and may thus be allowed to set up services to the USA.
