Feb 6, 2006 (newstodate): Runway reconstruction at Tblisi Airport may force daytime operations to be suspended during six months.
This has aroused strong reactions from airlines operating at the airport, and an alternative solution is now being investigated.
The Turkish consortium TAV-Urban, responsible for the airport projects, last week told airlines that the airport would have to close between 09.00 and 18.00 hrs every day during the period April to October.
If sustained, this would stall almost half of the airport's operations.
A solution could be shifting operations to another runway during the period, or working night shifts instead to keep the aircraft operations running.
