Feb 16, 2006 (newstodate): The project for a road connection between Sisimiut on the Atlantic coast and Kangerlussuaq Atlantic Airport/Sdr Stromfjord in Greenland is still advancing.
Near completion is a survey of the planned road's environment impact, and a localisation of the road connection in the terrain, and both reports are expected to be delivered to the local government shortly.
By April, the local government will initiate a public hearing before making a final decision before this summer.
The issue will then be brought to Greenland's Home Rule government, where deliberations are expected to start in the autumn.
Pending the final political decision on the project, including a plan for its financing, the project for the 170 km road will require some three years of construction work under harsh arctic conditions.
The projected road would become Greenland's longest, and replace helicopter services with some 2.5-3 hours drive from Sisimiut on the west coast to reach the Atlantic airport
