Feb 14, 2006 (newstodate): In December 2004 Croatiaa's Osijek Airport saw the start of a promising series of IL-76 flights from Tanzania with fresh fish destined for the markets of Italy, the Netherlands and France.
After seven IL-76 with 350 tonnes of imports and six tonnes of exports, the airport generated 81 IL-76 flights in 2005 with 3,724 tonnes of imports and 106 tonnes of exports.
The export cargo was primarily humanitarian aid and electronic equipment destined for Asian and African countries, previously collected at Osijek Airport and arriving by truck.
In January, 2006, only one cargo flight was landed, however.
-We believe that the main reason for the decline in freighter traffic is the change of cargo routes, including a reduction in flights from Europe and the Middle East to Africa. Also prohibitive jet fuel costs are a limiting factor, says Mirna Prelog-Gudelj, Osijek Aiport assistant manager ground handling.
Osijek Airport is now cooperating with cargo charter brokers and freight forwarders to seek more traffic and secure a role for the airport as an important cargo destination in Southern Europe.
