Feb 9, 2006 (newstodate): Budapest Ferihegy Airport is poised to become the region's leading airport, says its new owner, BAA.
BAA is determined to invest some USD311 million over the next six years in a range of airport construction projects, aiming at overtaking neighbouring Vienna and Prague airports in passenger volume growth.
Among the projects now being launched is an expansion of the current air cargo and logistics facilities, and the first phase of these projects will be completed before the end of this year already.
In 2005, Budapest Ferihegy Airport noted a decrease in cargo volumes by 7.9 percent to a total of 73,033 tonnes, compared to Vienna Airport's growth by more than 10 percent to some 240,000 tonnes, while Prague Ruzyne generated some 50,000 tonnes, roughly unchanged against the preceding year.
