Dec 5, 2006 (newstodate): Ownership of the Ukrainean carrier Donbassaero has been transferred from Donetsk provincial level to township level, allowing for more flexibility in future development.
With township ownership, the carrier can be transformed into a joint-venture with external, including foreign, investors, allowing for fresh capital to be invested in the airline.
The airport will remain under Donetsk provincial ownership, however, and the Ukrainean state has recently announced plans for a major modernisation program.
Donetsk International Airport, with a 2,484 m runway, was constructed at the end of the 1940'ies and last renovated in 1973.
Among foreign airlines serving the airport are Austrian Airlines, Lufthansa and Turkish Airlines, and domestic flights are provided by Donbassaero and Aerosvit
