Dec 22, 2006 (newstodate): 2006 will remain an annus horribilis for Airbus, but as the year is closing some glimpses of lights reappear in the form of fresh orders for the A380 aircraft.
Following on Wednesday's news of additionally nine A380 for Singapore Airlines, Qantas has now placed orders for eight more, taking its total of 20 aircraft to delivered from 2008.
This brings the total number of A380 ordered to 176.
It is understood that Airbus is offering additional A380 aircraft at discounted prices as compensation to customers hit by the manufacturer's production and delivery delays.
While the long-term net effect in profits for Airbus is questionable, it broadens the critical mass and puts increased pressure for a decision among airlines not yet committed to the A380.
Also Qantas will take four A330-200 aircraft to balance the shortage of capacity till the A380 is in place.
